DAVE AND ARDIS COMSTOCK  began publishing California history in 1979 while living near the former gold-mining towns of You Bet and Red Dog. They had no telephone, and no power except what they produced. In 1989 the Comstocks installed a battery-powered microwave phone link. At the turn of the century they added solar power and a cell phone. In mid-2008, still miles away from any paved roads, they connected to the internet. Ardis died at Santa Rosa in 2015. Dave continues to design, illustrate, produce and publish books about California's past, and he is currently writing a book about California life in the mid-1890s.
