Discovered in 1853, The Confidence Gold Mine was located next to the town of Confidence, which no longer exists. Today the mine lies within outlying subdivisions of Twain Harte, California. During its working lifetime the Confidence Gold Mine produced approximately 250,000 ounces of gold. After being operated successfully until 1940, the cost of pumping large volumes of water became excessive and the mine was shut down. When the author inspected the mine in 1978 it was being used as a local source of water. Includes photos, maps and appendices.
